One of the top tourist attractions in Glasgow is The Burrell Collection which attracts thousands of visitors. With over 9000 works of art in the collection and around 3000 displayed at one time this is one of the biggest collections created by one person. Sir William Burrell and his wife, Constance, Lady Burrell gifted his collection to Glasgow in 1944 and once a site had been found The Burrell Collection opened in 1983. Since its opening the collection has had in excess of 10 million visitors making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Glasgow.

The Burrell Collection is located in Pollok Country Park which was awarded Britain’s Best Park 2007 and Europe’s best park 2008. The building was purpose built after a long search for a suitable place on land donated by Mrs Ann Maxwell Macdonald in 1966. Pollok house which was home to the Maxwell family for over 700 years and also contains a fine art collection.

The building forms part of The Burrell Collection as architectural features from the collection have been integrated into the structure of the building. You can walk under arches built for medieval lords and ladies. There are also reconstructions of rooms from Sir William’s home, furnished in gothic style with items from the collection.

A new addition to the collection has just been added. The piece is called “Judith with the Head of Holofernes” and is an embroidered panel which was made in Britain in about 1660 from silk satin, worked in silk and silver thread and silver purl (BBC NEWS 21/10/09). This is the second piece of art with this name as the collection also has the painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder. Both works depict the account of the beheading of holofernes described in the old testament of the bible.

The Burrell Collection attracts tourists from all over the world as it is the largest personal collection of artworks which vary from tapestries, paintings to arches. The trustees of the collection also make some informed purchases of works that compliment or enhance the collection.

Glasgow has various museums and galleries such as Kelvingrove Art Gallery, House for an Art lover and the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art so it is ideal for those looking for more cultural activities. The city was also designated the UK city of architecture in 1999 due to the well preserved Victorian buildings and examples of famous architect Charles Rennie Macintosh all over the city which are the top tourist attractions in Glasgow.

Number 10 Hotel in Glasgow is set in an ideal part of the city for exploring the various tourist attractions due to excellent transport links and ample on street and off street parking. We are an independent hotel focused on positive customer experiences. All staff are happy to help with any enquiries about Glasgow and its tourist attractions.

The Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini from Paisley appeared at the former Carling academy on Wednesday the 14th October 2009. The newly named O2 academy is the ideal venue to host this gig as it has more of an atmosphere than larger venues such as the SECC. O2 secured this name change of the venue by securing a partnership with the venue owners as Carlings 5 year contract has now came to an end. All venues have now changed over to the O2 academy branding and O2 customers are now able to get priority tickets.

Tickets for the Glasgow gig were sold out as Nutini has a mass of Scottish fans behind him. He is renowned for his distinctive Scottish twang which emerges in his singing. Even though his songs Jenny Don’t Be Hasty and New Shoes were big hits with lots of radio airtime, especially in Scotland, they didn’t do as well in the charts as expected only reaching number 20 and 21 in the UK charts.

Paolos talent was spotted by his teacher at St Andrews Academy and encouraged by his music loving grandfather even though there was hope for him to go into his family fish and chip shop business. Nutini worked in the music business as a roadie until his big break at David Sneddons homecoming to paisley. Due to Sneddons late arrival Paolo won the chance to sing a few songs on stage which were well received by the crowd and resulted in one member of the crowd Brendan Moon offering to manage the singer.

Nutini is hardly a rags to riches story however he has worked his way into the music industry earning his popularity rather than be projected to fame and fortune like many of the pop stars in todays charts.

The next big act at the academy is another Scottish favourite Calvin Harris on the Wednesday 4th November. Rather than face the journey home on rooms are available at Number 10 Hotel which is a few minutes from the venue. Contact us on 0141 424 0160 or visit our website www.10hotel.co.uk for more details.
